Clairault Winery & Restaurant
MARGARET RIVER…
The once quiet rural community, dominated by dairy farms and timber production, with striking natural beauty and endless rolling surf, has grown over the last 35 years to become one of Australia’s most renowned wine producing regions and tourism destinations. Its unique, rich terrior, Mediterranean climate, and proximity to the cooling influences of the Indian and Great Southern oceans ensure consistent vintages and the creation of exceptional quality wines.
ABOUT CLAIRAULT…
Established in 1976, Clairault Wines was the sixth property to plant vines and remains one of the oldest privately owned vineyard estates within the premier Wilyabrup sub-appellation of the Margaret River Wine Region. Situated less than four kilometers inland from the Cape Clairault peninsula and 120 meters above sea level, this pristine 570 acre undulated property with bountiful creek-lines, natural springs, and some of the oldest native forests in the south west, make it truly unique. Its history, pedigree and forward-thinking approach has established Clairault’s fast growing reputation for being a serious player in Margaret River.
Owned by The Martin Family - Bill, Ena and their three sons Shane, Conor and Brian - they have set about turning Clairault into a “no compromise” operation. Substantial changes and investments have been made over the last ten years to improve the property - its vineyard, winery, and tourism facility - in order to meet the ever growing demand for Clairault’s wine domestically and overseas. Today, with a distinct focus on quality rather than volume, Clairault produces 200 tonne of exceptional wines and continues to enjoy much success at prestigious wine shows within Australia and overseas.
THE VINEYARD…
Passionate about the environment and consumer health, Clairault is leading the way in the implementation of an environmentally responsible approach to its vineyard management. These improvements have involved; the deployment of biological farming, low intervention-high precision viticulture, and a selective expansion programme and investment into mature vine management - bringing the total plantings from its original 30 acres to its present 90 acres. Biological farming is a mix of organic and conventional farming techniques which places a strong emphasis on soil biology. These techniques result in high quality crops, while using significantly less herbicide, no insecticides and no synthetic fertilisers. The biological farming, sustainable and low intervention techniques that were introduced to the Estate’s vineyard six years ago has ensured that only the purest of fruit is produced, thus achieving optimum flavour. This, along with the outstanding winemaking skills of Will Shields and his team, has helped create wines that are truly unique and distinctive to Clairault’s vineyard.
